Ms FORREST question to LEADER of the GOVERNMENT in the LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, Mrs HISCUTT

With regard to male patients referred by their medical practitioners for MRI scans to investigate or monitor prostate cancer that require the use of gadolinium contrast medium:

1. Where can these MRI scans be provided in the North of the State;

2. Can these MRI’s be undertaken in Burnie; and
a. If not why not?

3. Are the costs for these scans consistent across the region;

4. Are the costs based on the nature of the referral, i.e., from GP or Specialist, inpatient or outpatient; and if not consistent
a. Why are the costs different?

Answers:

MRI Prostate scans can be performed at the Launceston General Hospital, I-Med (Launceston, Devonport and Burnie) and Radiology Tas in Launceston.

Costs for the scan will depend on the provider, and the referring doctor. There is no charge for the scans if performed by a public provider or the referral is made by a public hospital.

If the service is provided by a private provider on referral from a private General Practitioner or medical specialist, fees may apply which are determined by the private provider. Patients may be bulk billed or need to pay a gap fee.
