Ms FORREST question to LEADER of the GOVERNMENT in the LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL, Mrs HISCUTT

My question is a follow-up question related to the contract signed by the Premier with the AFL.

1. Noting the contract specifies a fixed roof, however concern has been raised by cricketers that International Cricket is unlikely to be able to be played under a fixed roof and further noting a fixed translucent roof is a minimum requirement:

a. Is the fixed roof negotiable;
b. Could a retractable roof be negotiated and still meet the requirements of the contract; and
c. Could a open stadium without a roof be negotiated and still meet the requirements of the contract?

ANSWER:

Under the contract, Part 1(a) of Schedule 10 notes the requirement for a fixed translucent roof.

It is noted that Cricket Tasmania Chair and ICC match referee David Boon was recently quoted in the media, stating that the new stadium at Macquarie Point could be used to trial Test cricket under a roof.

When the stadium project enters the official design phase, considerable further work will be undertaken on the specific design of the stadium, including the roof structure and stadium functionality for various events.

The design phase will also include detailed consultation on stadium functionality and events scheduling with key sports, arts and entertainment and business event stakeholders, and this may lead to consideration as to the type and style of roof.
